Didn’t plan on making an update today, but the ADHD brain itch would not go away! Warning, this is a bit rambly-as-I-think-about-it type post!
It occured to me the other day, when working on the latest project(s) that in many ways I’m limiting/restricting myself with how I do things- Now sometimes limitations CAN help focus the mind and what not, but it can also be a hinderance.
For example, quite often when working on, lets say a Quick Generator(QG) , as this is what promopted that brain itch, I have a format to follow, quite a simple one:
- Two tables
- Each table has d100 entries
When working on other PDF gen, of course I don’t really have that simple rule/format to follow, but its been a format that worked for many years for the QG series.
But there is a major downside.
Some topics simply do NOT have at least 100 possible data entries for the table(s) – Afterall, there is only , for example, a few terms that can be used for Mountain, or forest etc.
This leaves me with a few options.
- Expand the scope of the gen, so for example forests would become “Forests, Jungle & Other Woodland Areas”
- Repeat the entries
- Reduce the table size
So far, I tend to go with option 1 (Expand) as option 2 (Repeat) feels, well, lazy (even though I’ve done it before – and regreted doing so) and option 3 (Reduce) then breaks the QG main rule of 100 entries per table, but not enough possible entries I felt to make into a full gen
As you can see, this sometimes can cause me issues and a few projects have been , not scrapped, but put on the back burner because of it.
However, there is a 4th Option, one that popped into my noggin literally this morning :
4 – Create a new format (New)
The Quick Gen series has done me good over the years and will not be stopped – for now, the newer experimental format is , in my notes at least, called “Simple Gens” as a working title for the range.
The plan is it works as a hybrid/mix between a Full gen with tons of tables and the quick gen format, closer to the quick gen series.
As with other format(s) I’ll have some simple guidelines for me to follow :
- Not limited to two d100 tables
- Not limited to just two tables either – If it needs three, it will be three
- Each table will be in one of the regular formats for results (d4,3d6, 2d10, d20, d100 etc – Whatever it needs)
- No more than 5 tables – if it needs three, it will get three, if it works with four then use four and so on
Including the “Simple Gen” format, not including the List series etc, there would be three styles/guidelines of PDF/Gens.
- Quick (2 d100 tables)
- Simple (the above)
- Full – Other gens – No real limits/restrictions as such
I’m probably going to post again tommrow about other things, more so that it doesnt get suck in my head, for transprancy etc – As I said before, I’m wanting to try and “reboot” things, both for the Blog and EG in general, without over promising and factoring in my health issues (both physical and mental).
